GWSIYI Birthday Celebrations
As many members will know, GWSIYI celebrated its first birthday on the weekend of the 4th and 5th November with a special rope workshop taught by Sheila Haswell in the Glasgow Academy gym hall*. Practising asanas with the help of ropes, or Yoga Kurunta, is a hugely beneficial, liberating and fun way to work, but a degree of caution is required! We were therefore really lucky to have Sheila's long experience, great knowledge and eagle eye to guide us through the two day event.
To the uninitiated, this may all sound a little mysterious and rather alarming, but in essence, rope loops were attached to wall bars and used to provide support in various asanas. In this way, we experienced Adho Mukha Svanasana (Head Down Dog) with a lift in the hips and no weight in the arms, Utthita Hasta Padangustasana with a pulley to raise the leg and Salamba Sirsasana (Head Balance) with no weight on the head.
As student's confidence grew under Sheila's expert and friendly instruction, it was a marvel to see what postures were achieved!
Our warmest thanks go to Sheila for opening our eyes (and chests and groins and the backs of our knees) to this way of working.
Thanks also to the committee members who did so much to organize this event.

Any GWSIYI member who attended this event and would like to comment on their experience is welcome to send an email to: gwsiyi_info@yahoo.co.uk.
